Students donated approximately one ton of goods to the Panama City Rescue Mission. Over $24,000 was contributed by students to two mission efforts, one in Kenya and one in Turkey. In addition to all of this, there were community groups, athletic competitions, group devos, dinners together, baptisms in the Gulf Mexico and more.

GCG is always a wonderful way to start a new year together. Our students returned to Knoxville encouraged, inspired, and more in love with God.

The annual Fall Retreat is almost upon us. October 5-7 we will be heading out to the Cherokee National Forest where we will be camping and rafting. That’s right. Camping. In tents. Pray for good weather! If you’re so inclined, you can raft the Hiwassee with us on Saturday and the Ocoee on Sunday. We will eat our meals and have our devotionals around a campfire. Michael Fann from Lexington, KY will be our speaker (formerly “The World’s Greatest Youth Minister” now a Camp Director). And who knows what delicious smoked meats Jeff and Katie Wischkaemper will be making for our meals this year!? We’ll be staying in a large campground, overflow field next to the Hiwassee where there will be plenty of space for ultimate frisbee, kickball, and skipping. The cost for this retreat begins at $30 and increases depending on how many rivers you want to raft. Please contact the CSC asap to sign-up. csc@utk.edu

Well, it’s that time of year again. Along with the joy of graduation comes the sadness of seeing our seniors move away to start new jobs in other towns. It’s too quiet around here (except for the sounds of the new dorm being built behind Hopecote). For those of you who will be in Knoxville for the summer here’s the basic plan: Sunday mornings we’ll be traveling to supporting congregations promoting the CSC, Sunday nights we’ve been invited to Anthony & Pat Fuller’s home (June 10, 24, July 8, 15, 22), Wednesday nights we will meet for an assortment of activities. This is, of course, after we all watch Cory and Abbie get hitched.

The Spring Break Mission trip group braved temperatures ranging from 23 degrees to 72 degrees, snow storms, dust storms, and to round out the week, a couple of beautiful sunny days. We made many repairs to the Nelson family home, which included a complete new roof, the exterior painted, and fixing the bathroom walls, sinks, and ceiling. We also painted the ceiling of their kitchen and the inside of the church’s classroom. As you would expect, we were far more blessed by meeting and getting to know the Nelson family and working together as team.

On our last day of the trip were able to explore Shiprock, Four Corners, Monument Valley, and Canyon de Chelly. What a change from East Tennessee!

Read a summary from one of our students…..

Gulf Coast Getaway has always been a well anticipated and exciting way to kick off the New Year, and the 2012 edition did not disappoint. The singing was phenomenal, and truly an encouragement in itself. It is not every day that one can sing praises with 1,700 other enthusiastic college students in such an electrifying atmosphere.

The speakers also blessed us with many words of wisdom that pertained especially to college students. Randy Harris focused on some of the biggest threats that young people today face in their relationship with Jesus. The most significant threat that he spoke on was all the distractions we have around us. It is true that between our schoolwork, social lives, and arsenal of electronic gadgets and gismos we often times lose track of that which is most important.

Mike Cope also led us on an enriching spiritual journey through the Bible as we all particiapted in an in depth study through the Old Testament to give us the necessary tools to properly understand Jesus entrance into the world.

We then studied over each of the gospels in detail to fully understand the life that Christ lived on earth, and ultimately the magnitude of the sacrifice that was made for our sins. I went there thinking this is way too long of a car ride and came home with a sense of fire and excitement for Christ tht only comes from an experience such as Gulf Coast Getaway.

God Bless,

James Henderson
